USPTO Lowers Some Trademark Filing fees effective January 17, 2015

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has reduced some of its filing fees to further reward the proper electronic filing of certain documents in both the trademark application process and also in the renewal process required every ten years after registration. The previous fees for electronically filed applications were $325 per class of goods or services, or $275 per class if certain conditions were met (including choosing a description of the applicant’s goods or services from an “approved” list in one of the USPTO’s manuals). Beginning this week, however, the new electronic filing fees will be $275 per class, or $225 per class if certain conditions are met, for a savings of $50 per class.

They have also reduced their ten-year renewal fees (Section 8 and 9 renewals) for those electronically filed, from a previous total of $500 per class, to a new total of $400 per class.

These new fees constitute a further incentive to trademark applicants to properly file their applications and renewals with TEAS (the Trademark Electronic Application System), and is a welcome reward for the reduction in paper filings. Please feel free to contact me with any trademark filing questions. I look forward to continuing to file many trademark applications on behalf of my clients and to continuing to assist them in making the process as smooth and successful as possible for their valuable brands, trademarks and service marks in 2015.
